IN THE BAG IN ALASKA

IN THE BAG, TravelMarvin KingComment

The weather in Alaska was something we were definitely not used to. I mean, we have dealt with single digit weather in Glacier National Park but heading far up north in up to Fairbanks, Alaska was a whole new ball park for us. We went from 30˚ landing in Anchorage and it quickly dropped to 9˚ heading up to Denali then when night came around when we got into Fairbanks, it was a painful -11˚. If you have ever been out in this type of weather with electronics, then you know what it could do to your equipment. Batteries were fully charged and after about 15 minutes out in the cold, things just die. Packing light and keeping things warm were definitely priority. Here's just a quick In The Bag shot we put together while shooting sunrise at Harding Lake in Alaska.

Growing up in the Midwest, I was accustomed to brutally painful cold weather. I wasn’t too worried going into Glacier National Park during the winter season, even though the forecast was looking like 8 degrees during the day and below 0 degrees come night fall. Regardless, you always have to be prepared especially with weather conditions like this. You need to make sure you have the options of staying warm when too cold and to have some sort of backup food when stranded. Here are some of my essentials I carried with me during my trip to GNP, Montana.

  • Coleman Mummy Bag
  • Cinevate Atlas 26” Slider
  • UnderArmour Water Cannister
  • Husky LED Flashlight
  • Sour Patch Kids Berries
  • Trolli Evil Twins
  • Leftover Stromboli
  • Chevy Tahoe FOB
  • Manfrotto Tripod + Ball Head
  • Nike Storm-FIT 2.0 Gloves
  • Incase Leather Wallets
  • Sony A7 Batteries (x6)
  • MIGHTYKILLERS x Mophie Powerstations

  • Hand + Toe Wamers
  • Canon EF 70-200L f/2.8
  • Joby Gorillapod

  • LexDray Tahoe Duffel

Living in the Bay Area and being spoiled with year-round awesome weather has definitely made me miss the snow, especially so during the Holidays. During the Fall, one of the best places to visit in Sacramento County is Apple Hill, located just 45 minutes outside of the city of Sacramento. It is truly a hidden gem, home to some of the best slices of apple pies I have ever had and of course, the cider. We recently had the pleasure of working with the Visitors Bureau of Sacramento and the Apple Hill Growers to host another Landmark Lurkin event and Moe was out there scouting. Although his job was to go out and shoot the grounds, he got a bit too caught up with all the donuts. Check out the essentials that Moe brought with him while I sippin' cider and downing donuts.

  • Chrome Industries Niko Messenger Bag
  • Apple Hill Apple Cider.. no Hennessy
  • Carl Zeiss Circular Polarizer
  • Sony A7ii with 24-70mm F/4 (Mounted)
  • Manfrotto Tripod
  • MIGHTYKILLERS Business Cards
  • Chapstick
  • Apple Hill Visitor Map

We've recently caught up with @PatrickGiang shortly after his return from his off roading trip through the Mamquam FSR (forest service road) and the Indian FSR. He mentioned he doesn't typically pack this much stuff in his bag on his trips but the idea of not knowing what he will come across on his trip convinced him to bring a little more than usual. Most people think that packing more is better than not enough, and only in rare occasions are they right.. This was one of those instances where packing more came in handy. Patrick brought his Macbook that he typically doesn't carry and he's glad he did. He was able to edit photos while he was out while enjoying the soundtrack of mother nature. Here's what we discovered in his bag:

  • Nikon D3
  • Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4 (Mounted)
  • Nikon D90
  • Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5 w/ ND filter (Mounted)
  • Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5
  • Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control IR
  • Nikon Battery
  • Nikon 4GB USB Stick
  • Langly Alpha Pro Backpack
  • Map of Vancouver
  • Canadian Passport
  • iPhone 6
  • iPod Shuffle + Headphones
  • WD My Passport Ultra 2TB
  • MacBook Pro 13" Retina
  • Lexar Professional Memory Cards

We recently had the pleasure of staying at The LINE Hotel in Los Angeles this past weekend after our long trip out in the desert. Let me be the first to say that after hiking two full days in the Mojave Desert in the 90's, with no access to running water, checking into this hotel was definitely beyond climatical. First thing I did was jump into the huge shower, that could have fit all five of us guys in there (not that we did...) and washed off the two-days worth of dirt/sand layers from my skin and jump into the cozy-team room slippers... which eventually became my on-the-way-to-the-airport-slippers. During our quick one-night stay at this freaking awesome suite, there were just a few essentials that I had to have.

  • The LINE Hotel Room Slippers
  • MIGHTYKILLERS Basic Cap
  • Magazines & Books with an awesome Erin Althea design paperweight.
  • Voigtlander 21mm f/1.8 Ultron
  • Sony A7ii with Sony battery grip
  • Voigtlander 12mm f/5.6 Heliar (Mounted)
  • Canon FD 85mm f/1.2L with variable ND filter
  • The LINE Hotel stationaries
  • Sony batteries
  • Incase accessory pouch
  • The LINE Hotel gummy bears
  • iPhone 6 + Moment Lens + 18mm with caps
  • Klipsch Reference R6 headphones
  • The LINE Hotel room key
  • Two crumpled up Dollar bills cause I'm a baller
  • Louis Vuittion wallet

@Simply_Hannes recently took a lengthy trip to South Germany. Knowing that he would be gone for a week in Baden Baden followed by another strenuous week in Albstadt, near Stuttgart for some intense hikes, Johannes made sure to carry light. Through experience, it's always smart to pack only what you need; the necessities. Leave everything else you think you might need back because you will pay for it later during your trip when your bag is way heavier than it needed to be. Check out what what he packed on his trip:

  • Panasonic LX100
  • Panasonic batteries
  • Manfrotto Pixi Mini Tripod
  • Thinktank SD Pocket
  • WD External HD
  • iPhone 5S
  • MacBook Air 13"
  • Lenspen
  • DIY Paracord Strap
  • Camelbak 1L Chute Bottle
  • Germany maps
  • Victorinox Swiss Army Knives
  • Darth Vader USB Stick M
  • Mammut LED Headlamp
  • Notebook

All packed up and ready to head out to Yosemite, hands down one of the most beautiful places I've ever visited so of course, I wanted to be as prepared as possible to capture as many moments as I could without overpacking. Overpacking can be a serious problem. You end up bringing a bunch of shit you think you may need but most of the time, it just ends up taking up space in your bag and adds extra weight which ends up doing some damage to your shoulders and back while hiking. The best thing to do in avoiding all of that is to set a rough itinerary of your day so that you know exactly what you will need at specific locations and times. I was only going to be camping for 1 night, 2 days. Expecting plenty of hiking and getting little to no sleep while shooting the stars till sunrise.

Here's what's in my Chrome Niko Pack:

  • Canon FD 85mm f/1.2L with variable ND filter
  • Mophie Powerstation XL
  • Adapt Technology cable bracelet
  • Stanley flask
  • Yosemite brochure map
  • Moment Lens - 60mm + 18mm with caps
  • Husky LED flashlight
  • Apple iPhone 6 with Moment mount plate
  • Bogen Manfrotto Tripod
  • Sony batteries x6
  • Sony A7ii with Sony battery grip
  • Voigtlander 21mm f/1.8 (mounted) with Hoya ND8 filter
  • Troll Evil Twins
  • Dorcy lamp
  • Joby Gorillapod

All laying on top of my Coleman mummy sleeping bag. Although it's summer time, it still gets nippy in the middle of the night.
