The wonderland of Lake Tahoe

Sam Graves | @thesamgravesComment

The last time I went to Lake Tahoe, it was early September and we swam as the sun was setting. The lake was filled with campers, jet skiers and families on vacation and the changing seasons had begun. Little did I know that the next time I would visit, the change of those seasons would be in full force and the everything would be covered in white. My personal favorite. There's something so magical about the snow that I've always loved. The way the air is crisp and quiet, sometimes almost eerily so. Growing up northwest Oregon, we never had much snow. It rained 98% of the winter and when snow came, it never lasted long before it melted or was turned to slush by the oncoming rain. As such, the snow is always that much more sentimental and special to me. Like walking through a snowglobe.

One of my favorite parts of traveling and seeing places over and over again is the changing of the seasons and how it causes the landscape to take on an entirely different persona. It's so fun as a photographer to have the opportunity of capturing the same place but in different conditions. It's as though you're seeing it with a new set of eyes or a very fresh perspective. Seeing Tahoe in the middle of winter was like returning to a whole new place that I had never seen before. It was amazing. The beauty of Tahoe and the Eastern Sierras breathtaking, regardless of the condition. It's becoming one of my new favorite places to visit, as it's only 3 hours outside of San Francisco, an easy drive and the perfect getaway location to spend time with friends, doing what we love to do most - explore and create. I love being in a car full of people when drive past a beautiful scene and someone yells "STOP!" as the driver immediately pulls over and within seconds, we are all piling out of the car with our cameras in hand, capturing the the beauty that lies before us. It adds a different meaning to the word adventure and makes me realize that not everything has to be the 20 mile hike through the jungle or sleeping in a tent in the mountains while braving sub-zero temperatures. Sometimes, it can be just as meaningful and adventurous driving through the snow, searching for places to pull off on the side of the road like playing a game of I-spy-with-my-little-eye. It's all what you make it and while I have a love for some of the more rigorous outings, simple moments like these are just as special.

2015

Lifestyle, Travel.Comment

What's your goal each year?

You may have a resolution that you've set to accomplish or you may just want to live each year to the fullest. Whatever the objective is the end result is always the same, to be better than the previous year.

For MIGHTYKILLLERS, 2015 was HUGE. The #MKEXPLORE hash tag grew from 50,000 posts in the beginning of the year to 777,000 as of today! We even had the opportunity to connect with people from around the world through our MKEXPLORE meets. As we made stops all over from Mumbai, Tokyo, Shanghai, Pacific Northwest, Sacramento, Boston, Toronto, and the list goes on and the support grows with it. Being able to host meets across the U.S. and internationally has always been a shared dream by everyone in the company. This wouldn't of been possible if it weren't for the community and the support you've shown.

Not only did we get to connect with individuals, but with companies as well. Collaborating has always been a huge part of our core beliefs, so it was exciting to work with many industry leaders from Jaguar Land Rover Motors to SanDisk, and even other creatives such as Duarte Inc. We can’t thank them enough for letting us bring our own sense of style and touch to each project, and we look forward to any new projects in the future.

Many may not know, but MIGHTYKILLLERS first started out as a clothing brand. We may have evolved a bit from a basic clothing brand, but our roots are still very much in fashion. We believe that everything is connected from fashion and styling to photography and travel. This year, we pushed out even more product while designing each piece with high quality materials that we wear everyday. The amount of support we’ve received from each drop has been incredible. For the next year, you’ll be sure to see more releases with the same dope designs.

------

Now for me personally 2015 is probably best summed up into one word, unexpected. If you told me in the beginning of the year that all of these things would happen I probably wouldn’t believe you. That’s not to say that I live a boring life with no excitement, but rather it’s a justification as to how amazing the year was. It definitely had some rocky times and moments of uncertainty but honestly would life be any fun if it didn’t?

One thing that stayed pretty consistent was my group of friends who've stuck with me for sometime now. Year in and year out they have always been there for me, and always continue to push me to do better. Whenever I see my friends/family succeed it always fills me with a sense of pride, and this year was a testament to that. From passing the California attorney bar exam to getting married, I’m pretty sure all of them had it covered. It was a big honor to not only see two of my best friends get married this year, but also be apart of their special day.

I had the opportunity to travel a lot this year; not just with a group of friends but also by myself. Up until this point I never realized how life changing traveling alone can be. If you haven’t already, I highly suggest just taking a trip by yourself somewhere. It doesn’t have to be far or expensive; just get out of a familiar surrounding. Every time I went away, I found out something new about myself, and improved on something old.

Within these last few months, it really started to hit me that I'm getting older. I realized that people come and go in your life, but when some people come in they really make an impression and help you see things in a whole new perspective. Those are the people you really have to thank because a fresh new perspective will always give you a whole new outlook. So with that, I'm excited to be looking towards whats in store for 2016.

Cheers.

IN LINE AT LAKE MCDONALD

Our first stop heading into Glacier was this lake that I had come across while researching this destination, Lake McDonald. I saw plenty of photos of this place, in all different seasons and none of them came short of breath-taking so it was definitely a must. I didn’t know what to expect getting to this place, which is all the reason for me becoming completely speechless when I turned the corner from the parking lot and saw this expansive view of the lake. The water was clear as glass and super calm. The sky was blue with clouds full of character. It was going to be one hell of a sunset, this we knew.

Growing up in the Midwest, I was accustomed to brutally painful cold weather. I wasn’t too worried going into Glacier National Park during the winter season, even though the forecast was looking like 8 degrees during the day and below 0 degrees come night fall. Regardless, you always have to be prepared especially with weather conditions like this. You need to make sure you have the options of staying warm when too cold and to have some sort of backup food when stranded. Here are some of my essentials I carried with me during my trip to GNP, Montana.

  • Coleman Mummy Bag
  • Cinevate Atlas 26” Slider
  • UnderArmour Water Cannister
  • Husky LED Flashlight
  • Sour Patch Kids Berries

Creativity is a strange concept.

If I'm honest, I've been in a huge rut. The past 4 months have been draining. While I've spent the majority of my time in classrooms and studios on campus, my mind has been elsewhere. Sure, there are some people/professors who have served as inspiration - People who are focused and on task; however, the college culture of procrastination is killing me. Being surrounded by people who are dodging deadlines and cramming sub-par efforts into projects is tough. Classrooms can teach technique, but they can't teach passion; and passion is necessary to fuel your creative processes.

I've begun to see the importance in surrounding yourselves with people who are passionate; the importance of surrounding yourself with people who are striving for excellence. It reminds me of the old "if your friends jumped of a bridge, would you?" I want to be surrounded by people who are jumping headfirst off the bridge into the unknown, people who are following their dreams so heavily that failures not an option. People that aren't fueled by deadlines and obligations, but fueled by a burning desire to create and progress. My friend Micheal said something that stuck out to me today. He told me when he was 18, he figured out what he wanted to do, made a plan and gave himself no outs. He said he was either "going to make it, or end up homeless"; and years later, that commitment shows in his work and his success.

These past few days I've been surrounded by two of the heaviest hitting photographers in the state of Colorado - Garret (@short_stache) and Luke (@victorofvalencia) - guys who's work is constantly pushing me to refine my own craft.

You'll never be in a creative rut if you surround yourself with the right people - This last semester is going to be lit

THE MISSION TO AVALANCHE LAKE

Marvin King | @MIGHTYKILLSComment
012-10.jpg

Being that 90% of Glacier National Park was closed for the season, it made it impossible to see the true beauty of this place. The one and only road that cuts through the entire park, Going-to-the-Sun Road was closed. This meant that the only way we could really experience the park was to travel on the outskirts of it and trek miles and miles into the central portion in order to reach some of the destinations. We had the pleasure of meeting up with Ranger Jake of Glacier National Park Services to give us a super detailed agenda and route options for our visit. Definitely could not have done it without him, thanks Jake!

Avalanche Lake was easily one of my top destinations, well one of my top accessible destinations that is. Even then, we would have to drive as far as we could go till we reached the locked gates and then trek about 4.5 miles roundtrip in order to reach this lake. Little did we know, this trip was one of the most scenic. We stopped every couple hundred feet to shoot and we realized we were running low on time. If we were to make to the lake by sundown, we had to book it.

After a strenuous hike of slippery rocks, knee high snow, up-hill climbs, we finally came face to face with Avalanche Lake. There is literally no feeling like the feeling of reaching a destination that you’ve really pushed your body’s limits for. Even though 4.5 miles isn’t that bad, the snow, the ice, the up-hill climbs, the snow gear, the camera equipment in my bag, it all really takes a toll throughout that trip. There was nothing like walking onto the sketchy thin-layered ice and hopping around on frozen logs and branches to be in the middle of the lake and tearing open a pack of frozen Sour Patch Kids and enjoying a sunset.

Life can be overwhelming at times, and everyone needs a place to unwind. For many this means going out, hitting the gym, or spending time with loved ones. But for me I've always found the outdoors to be my escape.

There's something about being outside, especially during the winter months that’s calming to me. I've always been drawn to it ever since I was a little kid, and as I grew older the attraction never faded. In my early years, family day trips would grow into snowboarding expeditions with friends, which have now turned into solo adventures in the same place. From the fresh powder lining the beach to the still clear waters of Lake Tahoe, this is where I found myself this past weekend. Reflecting on everything.

As I near the intimidating age of 30, I can’t help but to think back on all that has happened and that’s going to happen. You begin to realize that your family and friends are getting older with you, and as more time passes you being to appreciate what you may have taken for granted at one point. You appreciate that they are all finding their own path, and you look forward to the new experiences ahead. You look back on past and current relationships as you search for growth. Have you grown as a person? Whether it’s in my relationships or in my career, growth is something I’ve always found myself reflecting on the most. I think it’s important to ask yourself this difficult question, "Are you growing?" If not, what are you changing so you can grow? I’ve got a friend that always tells me, "Each passing moment is a chance for change." He really believes it, even got it tattooed on his chest, and honestly I didn't get it at the time. But maybe after all these years he knew something I didn’t... until now.

With the sun setting and the golden hour slowly turning into an incredibly underrated blue hour, I snapped a few more pictures and started to pack my things. I wish I could say that some huge realization hit me and everything was all of a sudden as clear as the lake, but lets be real that shit doesn’t happen. Instead, I left feeling a little calmer knowing that everything I’ve been doing these last few months would pay off eventually.

Staying hungry to achieve your goals is half the battle; the other half is waking up every day looking to eat.

Halloween in New York

It was my first time visiting New York during autumn. I never catch a flight out at the time, but my friend Eric and I got lucky with the Jetblue sale (scored a $188 round trip ticket, sorry kind of have to flaunt that). Anyway, usually trips to NY are just mostly meant for leisure time away from hectic school schedules. Had the pleasure shooting alongside with the homies Insighting and marcel_white during my few days there.

On another note, shooting street photography is quite challenging on film, but it also made me quite bored of just straight documenting. After getting the photos developed and scanned (self-processed) I found it amazing how color correction on scanners can easily make photos taken on a 4 or 5 decade year old camera give digital a run at its game. Well, this will probably one of my last posts of strictly focused documentative and aesthetically pleasing photography. Hopefully I'm able to bring more of conceptual, meaningful photos, either it be surrealism or series, without falling on the spectrum of fine art photography. That'd be the day honestly.

Give Thanks

This past week I was able to spend the Thanksgiving Holiday in Colorado. While it seems like an ideal situation, there was one setback: I would be home alone. To be on your own over a holiday that puts an emphasis on family is a unique experience; during my past 4 years in school I was never able to go home and be with my family since basketball season always overlapped it, so being on my own in the end of November is nothing new to me.

But this year was different. This year I was able to BE on my own; I wasn't being corralled on the way to a gym or team dinner, I was with my thoughts and a small number of close friends. I think its wild when you get the chance to experience something as routine as a Thanksgiving meal through a different perspective. I'm a firm believer in opposing the routine, and this past week I was able to do that. I was able to watch the sun go down every night above 10,000ft. I was able to snowshoe out onto ridges in search of rocks to find shelter from gusts. I was able to eat a 3-course Thanksgiving feast at a small pub. I was able to work on new projects with awesome clients. I was able to spend my afternoons snowboarding at keystone before I headed off to shoot in the afternoon. And most importantly, I was able to appreciate those around me, and fully reflect on everything I have in life to be thankful for.

I was able to throw out the routine, and create my own tradition.

- Happy Thanksgiving

The Glacier Tour

Travel, LifestyleSam Graves | @thesamgravesComment

To me, nothing says "adventure" like a trip through the mountains and there are few things that I anticipate and enjoy more than standing in the presence of them. Something about them have always had a way of taking my breath away and making me feel both powerful and insignificant at the same time. It's a crazy feeling, one that I find incredibly hard to find words for.

We took a trip into Glacier National Park, knowing it was winter and that most of the park would be closed but little did we know that even the outer edges of the park still top the worlds most beautiful sceneries. We shot sunrise, mid day and sunset every day of our five day itinerary and while it was very cold, and a non stop schedule, it was one of my favorite trips to date. We toured through icy roads, hiked miles through bear country and had the most epic snowball fight the world has ever known. Ever.

We came and we conquered. And who knew that frozen Sour Patch Kids could be so good?

CREATIVE COLLABORATION

Events, Lifestyle, Travel.Comment

It's rare these days to come across a company that truly believes in your vision, let alone is wiling to help you achieve that vision. Typically if there is no monetary return than the likelihood of a helping hand is slim. However, like with most things there are certain exceptions to this case, and Duarte Inc. is a prime example of that exception. Having built a reputation as masters in the art of visual storytelling, Duarte has become a powerhouse with a client list ranging from ESPN , former Vice-President Al Gore, Shiseido, and many moreIt's an honor to have such dope mentors guide us as we find our own voice within visual story telling.

At first we had trouble trying to decided which MIGHTYKILLERS story we wanted to represent. We wanted to include all aspects of the brand our audience has come to know and love, but at the same time we also wanted to shed some light on things you may not of known before. We wanted this story to not only be a reflection of our past but also a look into what we have planned for the future. Simply put, like a pair of Royal Jordan 1's this story needed to be timeless.

This creative collaboration didn't simply happen over night, but after many months of office meetings and countless emails we decided on our final story. Through trial and error, what seemed like disagreements at the time were just the opposite; instead healthy creative criticism on both sides. As a creative, its easy for constructive criticism to be perceived as a negative insight; however, its the true creatives that look at this criticism as a positive and a chance for growth.

Stay tuned.

SECRETS IN THE CANYON

The slot canyons in Arizona has long been on my bucket list so when the opportunity arose to go, you can imagine how stoked I was. I think we all knew fairly well just how popular Antelope Canyon is, with the amount of photos and advertisement going around but we just didn't really think anything of it. We planned to get in early morning and find a place to give us a tour of Antelope but we had no luck. Everything was booked up for the entire day. I kept searching and searching for other companies but everyone of them were completely booked. We finally came across this one company that offered a tour of an alternative slot canyon by the way of a H2, a bit more expensive but at that point, I was ready to drop down whatever to just see them. Although it was Antelope Canyon, I was still super stoked on being here. It was completely private and we had the freedom to just roam on our own and shoot. Glad plan B worked out.

The Sunken City

Lifestyle, Urban, TravelComment

I tend to hit the LA every few months for work but this time I wanted to switch it up a bit. During my trip, me and a few friends decided to take a trip outside of the city and head down to coast to a place called The Sunken City. When I first walked into this place I felt like I had landed on another planet. What used to be a populated neighborhood street is now an explorers dream due to the landslides and graffers that have transformed these ruins into what it is today. Thanks to my homegirl Minnie (@minniemorkie) for being my muse for the time we spent there. After that day I realized that there is much more to SoCal than just LA. I also realized that you should never snapchat while climbing loose rocks or you'll slip and smash your camera against a rock as you attempt to stop yourself from falling down a cliff.....

Leica SL 24mm , F/2.8 , 1/40, ISO 25,000

Recently I was invited to the Leica Headquarters in Wetzlar Germany with a few others. A handful of us were flown into Germany to be one of the very first to test out the new Leica SL camera with the new 24-90mm lens to voice our opinions on the camera before it is released to the public. We all met up in Wetzlar for the press event where we had the opportunity to witness the unveiling of the camera and to also hear the story behind the concept of this camera. The next morning around 8AM, the 8 of us were taken to an underground mine in a city nearby Wetzlar to test out the insane ISO capabilities of the Leica SL. I was able to pull away 25-50,000 ISO with very minimum noise which is incredible! I only had the camera for a few hours so I’m not able to give anyone a full review of the camera just yet, but so far I am very impressed to say the least. I will be receiving the Leica SL in a few weeks to test out during my trip to Montana and will be able to give a better review thereafter. Stay tuned!

As tradition goes, we've been holding photo contests at almost everyone of our EXPLORE meets. It's an awesome way to really challenge our guests to be creative and think differently than the person next to them when capturing photos from our meet. One of the things I enjoy most is being able to look back at all the photos taken from the meets and seeing just how different everyone captured it. All these different perspectives gives me a breath of fresh air from my usual style and edits; that is exactly our intentions with EXPLORE. We wanted to create a space, an archive, a collection that can inspire others to go out and explore their surroundings and capture it. On our third EXPLORE meet, sponsored by NICHE, there were two photos that really stuck out to us from the photo submissions on levels of style and creativity; Jordan and Carlos. These two won a free helicopter ride with Golden Gate Helicopters over San Francisco with one of our own, Nikk. A lengthy six months had passed since we announced our winners and we finally got them up in the air. Shout out to these two for being some genuinely dope people, gnarly photographers and of course, some of the most patient people I know for waiting six months for this to finally happen!

All the photos from this post are credited to both Jordan and Carlos, make sure to shoot over to their Instagram profiles and check out their work. Cheers

Seeing these massive trees made me realize how small we all really are in this world and there is still so much to see. I'm glad I got to experience this magical place and it has motivated get out and travel more.

On our way home we decided to take the scenic route and drive along the Oregon coast. Here are the photo from our trip. Enjoy!
